This exhibition marks the conclusion of ACGA Associate Member Brittany Rea’s six-month residency in at Sonoma Ceramics. In her time living and working at the Center, Brittany has taught ceramics classes for all ages including the highly popular “Ceramics Sampler” and lessons for girls in the Mentoring Alliance. She has been leading our first Friday ‘Date Nights’, a two-hour hands-on pottery session working on the pottery wheel. Her residency comes to an end with her solo exhibit in the Center’s Gallery 212 that opens to the public on June 3, 2016 and runs through July 1, 2016.
Brittany earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University with a concentration in sculpture / ceramics and a minor in Art Education. After leaving Sonoma Ceramics, she will be returning to Rochester, NY to join The Adorned Studios art collective. The support and time that the residency provided her was the driving force behind the development of her new jewelry line that she will continue to cultivate in the next stage of her career.
Brittany Rea’s Statement:
Self + Sonder, and 10 Suggestions are collections of work by Brittany Rea with a central focus on introspection and the inadvertent impact we have on those around us. The object-hood of this work is one facet of its existence while the awareness of self and the unidentified other are consequential.
Through the use of vitreous black clay embellished with delicately crafted metallic wire, Rea exemplifies the idea ofinherent beauty. The use of open space invites the viewer to look beyond the materiality of the objects to further examine their abstract significance. The duality of intro | spectate creates two experiences: one of material, one of spectator.
This exhibition is about reflection brought by looking and seeing, both within and without and is the culmination of Rea’s time spent as the Resident Artist at the Sonoma Community Center.
